Barriers to Employment Among Persons with Mental Impairments

Principal Investigator: David Mechanic

Project Type: Core Research

Project Year: 01

Thematic Category: Return to Work

Project Summary:

The purpose of this project is to understand barriers to employment among persons with mental impairments. Our ultimate goal is to build a model for the SSA, Congress, and policy makers that is guided by our findings from a variety of research approaches, including a comprehensive review of the literature, analysis of secondary data sets, and primary data collection and analysis.

During Year One of our study we were able to analyze several data sets and develop useful insights into the factors that are associated with successful employment outcomes in persons with mental illness. In addition, a review of the literature on mental illness and employment has suggested additional avenues of investigation. In Year Two we plan to (a) continue our analyses of a variety of complementary data sources, and (b) undertake a survey of persons and organizations that provide job seeking and other types of vocational assistance to those with mental impairments.
